SHJYL Policies and Procedures

SHJYL Policies will be reviewed annually at the required coaches meeting. Copies of policies will be handed out to all coaches. They will also be available for review at SouthHavenJYL.com. SHJYL Policies and Procedures are as follows:

Inclement Weather Policy – The SHJYL inclement weather policy complies with MHSAA guidelines. Some of the highlights are:

  • When lightning is observed or thunder is heard, the contest must be suspended. The occurrence of lightning or thunder is not subject to interpretation or discussion — lightning is lightning; thunder is thunder.”

  • When lightning is observed or thunder is heard and the contest is suspended, contestants shall not return to the playing field until lightning has been absent from the local sky and thunder has not been heard for 30 minutes.”

All program volunteers and participants are highly encouraged to register online for text alerts. In the event of a game cancellation, you will receive prompt notification by text and email. To enable text alerts, login at SouthHavenJYL.com. Go to Home >> Account Settings >> Mobile Phone Settings >> Click “Enable Text Messaging” and follow the prompts provided.

Heat Index Policy – Because of the early timing of the SHJYL season, this is not usually an issue. However, volunteers should be aware of the MHSAA guidelines especially for Summer All-Star tournaments. Always encourage players to drink water between innings and take regular water breaks during practices.

Michigan Sports Concussion Law – As of June 30, 2013, all Michigan coaches and parents are required by law to review and sign the league provided concussion materials. Coaches and volunteers are required by law to complete online concussion training each year. This will take place online during the volunteer sign up process. Parents/Guardians are responsible to review and sign the league provided concussion materials and turn in to your coach. Please see the Michigan Department of Community Health website for additional details about concussion training laws.

Youth Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy & Procedures – “One on one” coaching is prohibited. Always use the “Rule of 3”: There shall be no less than three people present at any time while working with youth. Also, all league practices and coaching must take place in a public setting. Per SHJYL rules, all practices must be on South Haven Public Schools fields or at City of South Haven Parks. See the list of downloads below to download the full Youth Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy & Procedures.

Emergency Contact List – Every coach is responsible for maintaining an emergency contact list for his or her team at all times. This contact information can be printed from the online system at SouthHavenJYL.com. Please contact a SHJYL Board Member if you need assistance with finding and printing your team emergency contact list.

Other Guidelines – Where SHJYL does not have specific rules or policies, please refer to the Michigan High School Athletic Association for guidance (mhsaa.com).
